H.A.V.E.'s History

The Early History of H.A.V.E. and the Walk for Water

Founding Vision: How H.A.V.E. Began

In 1982, moved by the pressing need for clean water in rural communities, Gerard Feltham and a group of compassionate volunteers founded H.A.V.E. (Help A Village Effort) in Canada. Their mission was straightforward yet profound: to help as many needy people as possible obtain clean, safe drinking water in their villages. Recognizing that access to clean water is fundamental to health, education, and economic development, they set out to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

The Inspiration Behind the Walk for Water

One of the hallmark initiatives that emerged from H.A.V.E.'s early years was the Walk for Water. This event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a powerful statement of solidarity with those who walk miles daily and carry water for their families. Participants would walk significant distances, symbolizing the arduous journeys undertaken by women and children in water-scarce regions. The Walk for Water continues to raise awareness about the global water crisis and mobilized community support and funds for H.A.V.E.'s projects.

An Adventurous Discovery Tour into Rural India (2006)

In early 2006, six dedicated members of H.A.V.E. embarked on a three-week journey to rural India. The team included volunteers passionate about seeing firsthand the impact of their work and exploring ways to enhance their efforts. Their itinerary spanned from January 26 to February 16, covering visits to projects managed by local partner organizations SGUS, RUCHC, and SUCHI.

Experiencing the Impact

The trip was nothing short of transformative. As the team travelled from village to village, they were greeted with warmth and gratitude by the communities they had supported. Visiting the wells that H.A.V.E. had helped install, they saw the profound difference that access to clean water made in people's daily lives.

Strengthening Partnerships with SGUS, RUCHC, and SUCHI

Collaborating with reputable local NGOs has always been a cornerstone of H.A.V.E.'s strategy. During the trip, the team:

  • Engaged with Local Leaders

Meetings with representatives from SGUS, RUCHC, and SUCHI provided insights into each community's specific needs and challenges.

  • Assessed Project Effectiveness

On-site evaluations helped identify what was working well and where improvements could be made.

  • Planned Future Initiatives

Discussions led to the conception of new projects, including additional wells and sanitation facilities.

The Legacy Continues

From its humble beginnings in 1982, H.A.V.E. has remained a volunteer-driven organization rooted in compassion and action. The 2006 trip to India exemplified the organization's hands-on approach and its commitment to transparency and accountability.

Why H.A.V.E.'s Work Matters

  • Health Improvements

Access to clean water reduces waterborne diseases, leading to healthier communities.

  • Educational Opportunities

With water readily available, children, especially girls, have more time to attend school.

  • Economic Empowerment

Time saved from fetching water allows women to engage in income-generating activities.

  • Community Development

Clean water is a catalyst for overall social and economic growth.
